The four fundamental rules of gun safety

ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED!

An unloaded gun is useless, and no one should ever assume that any piece he may see or touch is not ready to fire.  Be sure the gun is unloaded before handling it.  If you don't know how to clear (unload) a particular gun, ask somebody who knows how it operates to show you before you handle it.

ALWAYS KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED
IN A SAFE DIRECTION!

Never point a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy.

KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER
UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO SHOOT!

Keep your finger aligned along the frame, outside of the trigger guard, until you have identified and put your sights on a target and have made the decision to shoot.

 BE CERTAIN OF YOUR TARGET
AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT!

Never shoot at anything you have not identified.  You are responsible for the entire flight of the bullet.  Use an appropriate backstop when you practice.  Be aware of what is beyond your target that a bullet may penetrate completely.

Some trainers have come to add a fifth rule:
MAINTAIN CONTROL OF YOUR FIREARM AT ALL TIMES
You must maintain control in order to keep firearms away from persons unauthorized to use them.  This will reduce the possibility that you gun could be stolen, used against you, or that an incompentant person might carelessly cause an accident.
